The „Portraits” have been written by four authors: Marcin Rosołowski, Arkadiusz Bińczyk, Andrzej Krajewski and Wojciech Kwilecki. This is a pioneering collective work – the first synthetic history of Polish economy to have been written in the market economy era. The universally known „Encyklopedia of Poland’s economic history until 1945” was published in 1980s. Since that time there has been no similar publication in Polish, let alone in English language version. History, including economic one, is made by people. Therefore, the book is composed of biographical notes of entrepreneurs, businessmen, who had a significant contribution into shaping up of Polish economy. The book contains biographical notes of such well-known characters, as: Nicolaus Copernicus, Stanisław Staszic or Leopold Kronenberg, but also of several characters remembered solely be a narrow group of researchers. One such example is Pieter Stadnicki, a Dutch banker of Polish origin, who supported financially the American war for independence in its decisive moment. Another such character was Aleksander Hertz, a pioneer of Polish movie industry, and at the same time a passionate Polish patriot of Jewish origin.                                                        The book is lavishly illustrated,m also with photographs and reproductions that have rarely appeared in publications so far. The „Portraits” are not only an excellent gift for foreign friends or business partners, but also a guide to Polish history from a less known perspective: one of success and contribution into European development, and not of martyrdom. The first edition was published by the Warsaw Enterprise Institute in 2018. The most recent edition was enriched with 12 new biographical notes. The editorial staff of Polska Times recognized the book as one of five best books on historical topics in 2018. A technical partner of the book titled the Portraits of Polish Entrepreneurs is Fundacja im. XBW Ignacego Krasickiego (The Prince and Bishop of Warmia Ignacy Krasicki’s Foundation).
